2017 Summer News

We are in June and looking at the end of a long school year.  It has been a great year of nourishing all of our customers.  Our Harvest of the Month program was a huge success.  Every month we would highlight a local fruit or vegetable for a taste testing.  Fruit smoothies were also offered each time for the children to sample.  The well known Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is still happening daily. This program allows us to offer free fruit and vegetables everyday to the students during non-meal times.  We will distribute close to $13,000.00 worth of fresh fruit and vegetables this year alone.  It is so good to see the kids snacking daily on delicious fresh fruit.

Every Friday during lunch we have been playing music for the children to listen to while they eat.  It has made the last day of the week a fun Friday.  In May we offered our annual Luau to everyone complete with decorations and music.  We had a huge crowd for lunch that day and the kids had a blast.

I need to mention our no cost Summer Meals Program.  This summer we will be offering a free lunch in the cafeteria at Green Mountain Union High every weekday from 11-12 to anyone 18 years old and younger.  No need to sign up or register, just come down to the high school and have lunch with us.  Please call Jack Carroll for more information and starting dates as well as menus.  This is a great program for all sponsored by USDA and Green Mt High Food Services. You can also e-mail Jack at jack.carroll@trsu.org.  I would be happy to send you menus for our summer meals program at GMUHS.  This is a great opportunity for anyone under the age of 18 to receive a healthy lunch at no cost.

Last but not least a huge thank you to the staff in our kitchen.  We are so very lucky to have the experienced staff preparing safe and healthy meals for the children. This is a huge responsibility for all of us in School Food Services to insure a safe and quality meal every day for your children.  Have a safe and healthy summer and we hope to see some of you and your families for lunch at GMUHS.

No Cost Summer Lunch Once Again Available at

Green Mountain Union High School Dining Room

Green Mt. High in Chester is once again participating in the very popular no cost Summer Lunch Program.  A no cost lunch will be offered daily at the school in our dining room Monday through Friday all summer long. When school lets out there is a huge number of households that lose access to the school lunches they receive during the school year.  Our Summer Programs help fill this gap by providing free meals to children who otherwise might go hungry.  Plus, summer meals are sometime paired with enrichment activities such as our Summer Recreation Programs. We are in hopes of increasing the number of kids participating in the Summer Recreation Camps offered here in Chester knowing that there are Summer Meals available.  Studies show that when children don’t get proper nutrition, they fall behind their peers academically when returning to school in the fall.

The no cost lunch is for anyone 18 years old and younger.  There is no registration or application process involved.  Simply stop by the High School and have a healthy lunch.  We will be serving lunch Monday through Friday in the dining room from 11-12.  Menus will be available on line and we can e-mail one to you if you like.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds the Summer Food Program and the State of Vermont administers the school meal service.  All children 18 years and under can receive free lunch here at Green Mt. Union High.
