Artist Mollie Burke spent three days recently with third and fourth grade classes at Chester-Andover Elementary School engaging the students in an art and map making project.
The project, MAPS BY HAND: THE LAND, HISTORY, AND CULTURE OF VERMONT, combines Vermont geography, history, and culture in an artistic piece. Students incorporated their prior classroom research into a hand-drawn, hand-colored and illustrated map of Vermont.
Students first used a modified grid method to draw the shape of the map. Then then added towns, counties, agricultural enterprises, state parks, etc. depending on their area of study. These were labeled in a key along the side of the map. The entire map was outlined and painted. And the finished pieces are now hanging in the halls of the school.
This arts residency was made possible in part by the Vermont Arts Council.
